Phytosanitary Certificate & International Shipping Info
What is a Phytosanitary Certificate? A Complete Guide for International Plant Shipping
What is a Phytosanitary Certificate?
A Phytosanitary Certificate (often referred to as a “Phyto”) is an official legal document issued by the exporting country’s agricultural department—in our case, the Department of Agriculture, Thailand.
Its primary purpose is to certify that the plants in your shipment have been professionally inspected, are free from regulated pests and diseases, and comply with the specific phytosanitary import requirements of the destination country (such as the USA, Canada, EU, or UK).
Why Do You Need a Phyto for Your Rare Plants?
When purchasing rare aroids like Philodendron Florida Tortum or Monstera Thai Constellation from Thailand, a Phytosanitary Certificate is essential for several reasons:
-
Legal Compliance: It is a mandatory requirement for most international borders to prevent the spread of invasive pests.
-
Customs Clearance: Without this document, your package may be delayed, confiscated, or destroyed by customs authorities.
-
Plant Health Guarantee: It ensures that your plants have been cleaned (bare-rooted) and treated according to international standards before shipping.

Important Notes for Collectors
-
Validity: A Phytosanitary Certificate is usually valid for a limited window (often 14 days) from the date of issue, which is why we time our inspections perfectly with our shipping schedule.
-
Import Permits: While many countries allow small quantities without a permit, some (like the EU or UK) may require you to provide a “Small Lots of Seed/Plant” permit. Please check our FAQ for more details.
